Synopsis:
“Phantoms of Sierra Madre,” a feature film by director Håvard Bustnes, had its World Premiere at CPH:DOX in 2024. The film follows writer Lars K. Andersen as he reconstructs Helge Ingstad’s expedition in search of a lost Apache tribe in Mexico. What begins as an ode to the West turns into a profound reflection on the ethical implications of cultural intrusion. Lars and Håvard meet Pius, great-grandson of the legendary Apache warrior Geronimo, who claims that Apaches still live in Mexico. During their travels, they confront a Mexican family exploiting Geronimo’s name for commercial purposes and an intelligence agent who claims to have located the tribe while keeping the information secret. The dramatic climax occurs when Lars makes a shocking discovery in Helge Ingstad’s attic in Oslo, shedding a new light on their mission and raising profound questions on cultural appropriation and indigenous exploitation. Through striking images and poignant testimonies, “Phantoms of Sierra Madre” investigates the ethical boundaries of modern exploration and the complexity of cultural ties in the contemporary world.
Director’s notes:
As a filmmaker, I have often wondered if there are stories that cannot or will not be told. Are there stories that I am not allowed to tell, and who has the right to certain narratives? This self-critical film raises questions about the perpetuation of a tradition which colonial perspectives lead to condescending portrayals of indigenous cultures. The film delves into the ethical considerations surrounding cultural representation and appropriation.
