Italian Contest – Feature Film
Synopsis:
The documentary offers an insight into the lives of three 17-year-old girls from Maputo, the capital of Mozambique: Augusta, Mariana and Crimilda. Family, school and the rugby team are at the centre of their lives. Combining their passion for rugby, these young women use sport as a vehicle for emancipation, breaking gender barriers in a society that judges rugby as a rough and dangerous sport, ‘only suitable for men’. Their stories recount the three days leading up to the first women’s rugby tournament in Mozambique. The storytelling in the present tense offers an authentic and vivid glimpse into the daily reality of the protagonists, highlighting how rugby helps them to seek their future.
Director’s Notes:
In 2019, I met Irene Bellamio and her Rugby project in Maputo. In the time available to me, I decided to make an essay film. Without a script or script to follow, filming reality, trying not to jeopardize their daily lives with our presence. The approach was to use the camera as an observer. True, real, without punctuation. The girls, thanks to the interviews, are able to express their vision. Being able to give voice to these people is my greatest satisfaction.
