Short Synopsys:
ONE IN A MILLION tells the story of two teenage girls on different continents, connected through their screens and passion for gymnastics. In the midst of the dazzling social media world, they begin to find out who they are and what they want from life.
Whitney Bjerken from the USA is a world-famous YouTuber and gifted singer-songwriter. The quiet but sensitive Yara from Germany is one of her biggest fans. Connected by the glittering world of social media and their passion for gymnastics, they begin to find out who they are and what they want from life. A coming-of-age film about success and loneliness, friendship and first love, queer coming out and the courage to find one’s own voice.

Director’s statement:
The idea for ONE IN A MILLION came from the desire to understand better the world of today’s teenagers. One aspect that particularly fascinated us and raised many questions was the importance of social media for this young generation: we were particularly interested in the role of the fan and that of the idol, especially in their comparison and connection to one another — we wanted a psychogram draw from this social media relationship. Although Yara and Whitney never meet in the film, the focus of the film is on the virtual and mental relationship between the two protagonists. I wanted to find out how the intimate yet distant relationship between the two shapes each other’s lives.
